respect

(1)Illinois 90-89 (3)Arizona (after OT)

(4)Louisville 93-85 (7)West Virginia

in the true name of march 'madness' these two teams proved that they are truly worthy of being in the final four. oh, only if the final four matchups are going to be of this calibre...

respect. truly.

since two of my picks for the final four are gone (wake forest and syracuse) i really hope north carolina gets through and meets illinois in the championship game, and win the championship. that will put my prediction bracket right.

somewhere... beyond the sea...

great.

its spring break, and while the majority of my friends are basking under the sun in temperature range from 80 to 90 fahrenheit somewhere in the central americas (except for jose, who's somewhere in canada) i am here, in chicago, in mid 30s, and guess what?

its snowing! yet again, in march, and we're only a week from april.

and its not that kind of light snow like it was in atlanta, its snowing pretty well. its starting to accumulate, and though it will melt by tomorrow, i cant help but feel this is a pretty cold spring break.

finally managed to catch 'before sunrise' and 'before sunset.' though i won't say the movies were fantastically specutacular, i am glad that marc recommended these movies to me, it was a pretty nice journey travelling with jesse and celine. i totally loved the ending of 'before sunset' where it ended abruptly with celine going 'baby, you're gonna miss your flight' and jesse just plainly going 'i know.'

also managed to catch 'hotel rwanda' which was awesomely captivating performance by don cheadle.

i have not really been reading my friends' blogs for a while, and i took some time to go through the ones that ive linked. i need to update and add a number of people to the list. and i did the unusual of going through friendster profiles of my friends, since people tend to update their profiles and pictures pretty frequently. sometimes its my only method of keeping up with what other people are up to, and how some are changing. ive been insanely busy this semester, and ive not really gotten around to just sitting down and writing a really long email to my close friends yet. anyway, judging from the blogs and the images (especially the clique bbq pictures on lem's blog), it clearly seems im missing out on a lot of things. i really wish i was back in singapore at times. some seems to have changed a lot, whereas some are still the same. nevertheless, time has passed. regardless on how my search for co-ops go, the next time i'm most likely (note the usage of the words, as its not a guarantee) to be in singapore is at the end of this year, which will be close to a year and a half since i was last in singapore. things will be so much different by then, but im really looking forward to that time. it's pretty crazy, i'll be almost halfway done with my college life, with a semester of internship under my belt, and maybe more involved on campus, and more a wise-ass than i am now.

i wished i could continue blogging, as i had number of things in my mind, but i must leave for a dinner, unfortunately.

"Somewhere beyond the sea,
Somewhere, waiting for me,
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing;

Somewhere beyond the sea,
He's (She's) there watching for me.
If I could fly like birds on high,
Then straight to his (her) arms I'd go sailing.

It's far beyond a star,
It's near beyond the moon,
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon.

We'll meet beyond the shore,
We'll kiss just as before.
Happy we'll be beyond the sea,
And never again I'll go sailing!"

a nice little break

spring break's been pleasant so far. its not as cold as i imagined, but its still not the right temperature for a spring break either. but hey, who am i to complain?

the thing im most glad for is that i am able to rest. once and for all. it really is a much needed rest after a highly intensive 10 weeks ive spent in school.

got a much needed call for an on-site interview from one of the many companies ive interviewed, finally. it was from masterfoods (the one that makes mars, snickers, m&m's, etc) but the cold news hit hard when he revealed that he has an opening for a fall semester. i told him i'll see what i can do, as going down to the plant for an on-site tour is of no harm. its at south carolina, which isnt too far from atlanta either.

but here's the problem. starting in fall will most probably mean that my academic semesters will have to be somewhat adjusted, and if im not wrong, i will have to give my housing job up, coz i remember one of the requirements as having to be studying in the first semester of the job. so that complicates a lot of things. on one hand, i have a definite plan, to spend the fall semester studying, to be a housing staff, and maybe pledge to a fraternity (because being a housing staff = goodbye to social world) and that kinda aligns my classes in such a way that i can finish by the spring or the summer of 2008. however, if i am to put the semester up in the summer, i most probably will have to delay my graduation by a semester, i have not been able to figure that one out yet.

i need some incentives. the good part about taking the job, its a great private company. taking the summer academic semester will put me in 3rd year standing, and i will have priority in taking some of the advanced classes. however, i will have to let go of the housing job, and may need to delay graduation to a 5th year. which i am not willing to. and full time offer is not guaranteed. if the full time employment rate was disclosed, i might be tempted to take the job.

i can assume anything really, i might still be rejected after the on-site one, im actually surprised i got this call too, as i had read about horror stories regarding interviews with mars (they always have trick question) and i personally thought that i screwed my trick question answer pretty bad (i was given questions regarding efficiency of using nuts for confectionaries)

so that's one down. i have yet to hear from the other companies as of yet. i might need to wait around for them before making a decision.

urgh, its now a bigger headache to deal with...

back in chicagoland

spring break is here! i am back in chicago for a week long break that i badly need. and though i'll try to spend some time catching back on work, i'll try to rest as much as i can before the onslaught begins.

anyway, about the shananigans of last week... all three tests kinda went pretty bad, in my eyes. i bombed economics and material science. luckily, there was a 7% curve for economics, which means that my average is now a 85, and according to the professor, the optional finals will only improve my grade. i was led to believe that the finals will count no matter how well or bad you do, but now that he mentions that he wont add the finals if it brings the average down, there's an incentive to study for it. anything to get that A. mathematically its possible to get an A without the finals, by scoring full marks for the next 2 tests, and i can only afford to get one wrong for the next 2 tests, but that doesnt seem too realistic. i have to rely on further curves and make sure that i do well, before i consider taking the finals, but A is not a remote possibility.

i thought i did badly for computer science, but i scored a 85, which brings my average up to 87. if i continue to do okay for the homeworks and do decently for the last test and the final, with the extra credit, i just might end up getting an A, which is good news.

i spent most of the week preparing for 2 interviews and the 2 tests, that i was pretty much burnt out for the material science test. it came to a point where i could not care anymore, much to my dismay. i think i did alright, save for the last question, which was fill in the blanks, but unlike the practice test, it was without any words provided, which was a disaster for me. there's no way im getting an A or B for that matter for this test. i have to make sure i do well for my last test before the finals, and i hope that dr. tannenbaum's revelation that we need 85 and above to score an A holds true. i guess we learn more from dr. gerhardt, but the tests are very challenging. it was a shocking sight when one of the girls in the class kinda gave up and told the professor that she couldnt do it, and i assume she thought it was going to be like the previous 2 tests where we were technically given the actual paper beforehand, and as a result, she stopped coming to class and thought she'd get away. she was tearing when she left the room, and as much as she seemed pitiful, she really should have known better that it was not going to be the same with a different professor.

how glad i was when the material science test was over. i quickly settled lunch and did laundry, packed frantically and left for the airport shortly after the computer science lecture.

only to be welcomed with bad news. i was taking a detour to detroit with northwest airlines, and then to o'hare, since that was marginally cheaper, but i was told that the flight will not leave at 7:35pm, but at 9pm. my connecting flight was only 45 mins apart, and i was sure to miss it. the problem with travelling within the united states for multiple cities is that once one of your flight is delayed or cancelled, your whole trip is pretty much screwed. there was another guy infront of me who had to go to milwaukee, and he started getting all worried about reaching there the next day, but to our luck, northwest transferred both of us to a united flight which took us straight to o'hare. what luck. instead of wasting 2 time detouring, i reached chicago 2 hours before the scheduled arrival. since the ncaa tournament started, i was going to be able to watch the georgia tech match afterall!

so i reached chicago pretty fast, in roughly an hour and a half, got my luggage, and left to get the usual taxi ride to naperville. i had a pretty nice ride, with a pakistani driver, with whom i had a very interesting conversation about a lot of things, and the highlight of that ride was that he might have been the turning point in my life right now, regarding religion.

most other muslims will be pissed ot disappointed with the fact that i don't practice, much like an agnostic. but he was very forthcoming with the situation and instead of forcing facts down my throat, he did like like a lecture, where he explained certain aspects and benefits and whatnot, and he very well understood not to press the issue too much. he was a little liberal about a number of things as well. and i think it worked. it kinda re-ignited a possible change in perspective for me. i just might start looking up into re-learning arabic and finding out information. this, together with the gentleness of the islamic touch of ibrahim in 'monsieur ibrahim' is having a pretty good effect on me.

the taxi ride was somewhat like those rides in a movie where the person comes out having learnt a valuable lesson from the driver. he offered me a name card, which he told me to call him a day before i leave, so that he can come pick me up and take me to the airport. i think i will.

and the moment i got back in naperville, i had a shocking news. regarding the national college basketball tournament that just started on thursday, one of the favourites lost in the first round. syracuse. they were champions just 2 years ago, and i personally had put in a bet saying they will go to the final four (national semis). but so did everyone else. so almost everyone's bracket prediction is going to turn sour. and later on in the day, another favourite, kansas, lost too. now my syracuse and austin bracket is completely destroyed. i was doing pretty well, with only 2 mistakes so far, but these two are going to be extremely costly. the only bad decision i made so far was picking UTEP over utah and cleighton over west virginia (which was close). the only real mistake i made was the old dominion one over michigan state. and right now, even gonzaga lost to texas tech. this is not looking good. my chicago bracket is completely intact so far, but i have a feeling it wont stay that way for long. the nickname 'march madness' is very suitable, since there has been numerous upsets which are only the beginning, and many more to follow.

georgia tech beat george washington 80-68 and now faces louisville, which is going to be really tough, and thought i'd very much prefer that tech wins this, i still think that louisville is too hot to handle for tech.

that's all im going to be doing for the spring break, sleeping, watching basketball and catching up on work. it aint too bad, really. hopefully some job offers will come during this week too.

it's marginally colder here in naperville. my real 'spring' break will start once im back in atlanta, where i suspect will start is ascend to hotness in the coming weeks, and it will be back to the region where we can start calling the place 'hotlanta.'

quick post

i havent been updating, and for obvious reasons, because i am pretty busy. especially this week. i have an econs test, a CS test and material science test. on top of that, i have 2 interviews scheduled. i'm supposedly on the second round stage for john deere and milliken, but have yet to hear from them since. i really hope i get an on-site interview offer soon. right now, those two companies and masterfoods USA are the companies i really would like to consider.

and i have to do laundry and pack before friday evening, coz i have a flight to catch, which will first take me to detroit before heading to chicago.

sports update.. newcastle's been pretty awesome recently. FA Cup semi finals against the manures, i dont know how that will turn out, but hopefully for the better. we have a decisive advantage over olympiakos in the UEFA Cup, which should clear us for the quarter finals. so all's good on that side. georgia tech produced a brilliant run of consecutive wins in the recent weeks, before being humbled by tournament favourite duke. at least we got to the ACC championship game and successively a 5th seeding on the bracket. we'll face george washington on the 18th, which shouldn't be a problem, but the 2nd round is probably going to be tough, against in-form louisville.

bunch of the guys are going to pool in 5 bucks to see who can project the tournament the best. so whenever i have free time, im gonna be studying the brackets. as usual, some ties are really hard to call, and if you try to factor in the unprobably upsets, its really quite a task.

i offically became an e-bay-er. i spent a considerable amount of time looking for newcastle merchandise and was surprised to find a number of size s shirts at a rather reasonable price. i was so excited that i initially went out of control, and was braced to spend a considerable amount of money, but thankfully a number of people outbid me. a number of away jerseys from past seasons, a season review DVD is enough. i dont really spend a lot, so these expenses should not be a hefty burden on my part. its amazing how many things u can find. if i spend some time on it, i could probably sell off my collection of things such as old CDs, mangas, comics and merchandise. too bad they're in singapore.

if you guys read the news, then there was a national incidence taking place only about 5 minutes drive away from where i live. some guy grabbed a gun from a deputy officer escorting him to a court trial and he shot the supreme court judge of atlanta as well as two other people and ran off, sparking off an emergency national manhunt. he surrendered eventually, but that incidence was something that was very surprising. i mean, how often does someone get hold of a gun from a deputy, and not only that, shoot and kill the supreme court judge?

watched a number of good movies, they screened 'diarios da motocicleda' at the student center on friday evening, which my friends enjoyed it thoroughly. we then watched 'goodbye lenin' which we missed on wednesday, and 'the village' on saturday (was pretty interesting... a usual twist trend in the end by m. night shyamalan) and 'hable con ella' last night. a good blend of foreign and artistic films.

and now, instead of this being a quick post, it became a full entry.

insignificant account

i took some time to get my account deleted from all the numerous social networking websites. through getting a bunch of them to my email, i had created those accounts some time back, but only to end up not using, but continuing to receive authorizations mails and all. as a result, i decided to delete them altogether, since i hardly use these services, save for friendster, which, in my opinion, is the only original one.

so you will no longer be able to find me on thefacebook nor hi5 nor whatever other services. thefacebook seemed useful for a while, but it serves no purpose since it only caters to students living in america, and only sparsely beyond.

the only reason i will keep friendster, even if i don't really use it anymore, it primarily because of the fact that most people still do use it, and should i need to contact anyone, most of my contacts are stored there, and it will also be easy to disseminate information. and i do receive occasional 'hi's and 'how are you doing?' from number of people too.

so if you find any other services that has me in it, tell me, and i'll go delete them.
no point having a profile if im not using the service, right?

IMPACT scholarship application is done... not sure how that will turn out... i've been cleared to go into the 2nd round of interviews for John Deere, which is a fantastic news... going for interview for Milliken and Company today, and later on, with Rolls Royce. and there'll be that interview with MasterFoods tomorrow.

it's almost coming to an end... just a little bit more... cant wait for spring break.

dissolved girl

considering i did not have a break for the past 8 weeks, this weekend seemed fantastic. though i was pretty tired from the rigours of the week, i managed to have great fun. i woke up early saturday morning to go down to the greyhound station where zeehan was supposed to arrive around 9:30-ish, but as i had expected, the bus ride was delayed. i was frantically trying to find out their status as it was not noted on arrivals and she wasnt picking up her phone. i was kinda surprised to hear naheen's voice when the phone was actually picked up, and i found out she too was coming over, which was great news.

luckily, i had brought along my ipod to keep me occupied for the 2 hours i was waiting for them, and i was listening to the bunch of massive attack songs that i had downloaded earlier in the week. as my other cousins noted, they're fantastic, i've only been listening to their most popular ones, and this time, ive noted some of their more creative stuff like 'inertia creeps' and 'dissolved girl' (hence the topic title) 'i against i' and 'black milk.' its dark, but somewhat captivating sounds really intrigue me.

so soon enough, they were here, and i took them around tech for a while before leaving for her friend's place up in chamlee. it was kinda good in a sense that i was not heading to UGA, as that would have taken some time, and since i do not know anyone there, it would also have been a little awkward.

so we went over to shehzeen's place, and for the longest time, i was listening to a lot of girl talk, which ive not really had since i visited emory with pamela and leisha which was long way back last semester. but it was very welcomed, since its very different from all the guy talk that ive been having all semester, and it was sort of refreshing to be able to talk about a lot of stuff that the people i know in tech would not care about.

it was a neat surprise to find out that my cousins also liked the same kind of films as i did. they showed me number of of hindi films, which werent the usual dancing happy go lucky ones, but really serious ones. i had to give the first one 'swades' up, since by then, i had like 8 hours of sleep between thursday and friday, and i really needed some rest. i watched 'choker bali' which is actually a bengali story, and i did not expect to be impressed, but i was. we watched a good portion of 'american chai,' a hilarious indian-american film, i'll have to get a hold of that to finish it up soon.

since i had completely a lot of work over the week, i could afford to spend the whole weekend with them, which was great. prior to meeting them, i had watched 'closer' once again, as well as 'dark city' which was one of the recommended films to watch by dr. tryon. after i came back, i finally got to catch 'the legends of the fall' and that was one fantastic film that im surprised no one seems to know.

tech is celebrating international films festival and though i would like to catch all of the films, i cannot do so, as i need to start preparing for next week's meelee. however, i set aside time to catch 'monsieur ibrahim' which was a tale of a friendship forged between an old muslim man and a young jewish boy in a rundown area of paris. the movie is only about 90 minutes long, but it seemed as if the adventure could last forever, and i have not had a chance to see that kind of european film for the longest time. its very hard to find something that is of that duration, but feels longer, without making the audience feel like its a draggy storyline. i've technically caught all the other films except for the one being shown today, which is a documentary about the vietnam war which won the best documentary oscar in 2003 or soemthing. im not really interested in catching that, but since ive watched whats being shown for the rest of the week, i might set aside time for it. 'goodbye lenin!' and 'kandahar' is being shown for the next 2 days, with 'the motorcycle diaries' being shown on friday, which a number of us are going to catch. i only wish they'd screen foreign films more frequently.

and surprise surprise, i got a phone call from rolls royce on friday. they want to conduct a phone interview with me this wednesday, which is great, only for the fact that this might just be an internship. i'll try to find out if it somehowe can be extended for at least 2 semesters, coz then it can count as a co-op, and if its not, even if i get the job, i might have to reject that.

interviews this week; milliken company and masterfoods (the owner of mars and M&M's)

its a rather light week save for the calculus test and the interviews. im gonna get all the sleep i can technically afford and maybe squeeze in some time to catch movies that i could potentially use for my english term paper.

maybe on the verge of snapping off

im fortunate i decided to finish off all my work last night. god knows how it'd been like if i hadn't.

the culmination of the events of yesterday was just too much for me to take. after a long, hard, tiring day, it was not clearly not wat i wanted nor needed.

im surprised i have yet to snap off at somebody. well, i kinda got close to it, but restrained myself. im trying my best to not think about it and just be cool about everything, and it seems to be working pretty well.

whatever. i AM the frickin' highway. as scott told me, im not gonna take shit from nobody. im kinda glad that i got the CA job, i'm gonna submit the acceptance form later today, and ive sent out an email to pull out of the elections.

in either case, i probably will get to unwind pretty well when i meet Zeehan tomorrow. i have not met her in about... 3 or 4 years? it should be pretty fun, and U(sic)GA beckons. this is the first weekend since the semester started that im taking a full weekend off from work, homework, errands and whatnot. kinda hard to believe what taking 19 hours has gotten me to.

been talking a lot to scott lately about a lot of things, namely the housing issue, but he also told me to go pursue the certificate in finance, and all the people that he knows who pursued it benefited a lot from it, be it in terms of higher pay or getting to do more things. but if i decide to get all three major, minor and certificate, then i'll have to average 18 something hours, and that's crazy. if i take one extra summer semester at the end of my senior year, then i can probably average a somewhat relaxed 15 hours every semester from now on. i think that's more feasible, since that wouldnt actually add any extra semesters as my previous plan fits into 7 semesters. the problem now is to make sure the courses are offered in the specific semesters, coz if they are not, then that would be a big problem.

alright, will be off for the weekend, not like ive been updating that frequently anyway. i better have fun in athens.

this time, its snow

i guess the georgia kids were right. it does get colder in march, and it snows.

the temperature's gotten pretty low recently, mainly due to the frequent rain. but this time, as i was walked to the material science building, it snowed. not like that one in january where the water froze, its actually snow flakes falling from the sky. not big pieces, but its never too nice when theres millions of them flying towards your face, especially with the wind blowing almost horizontally.

well, its snowing legitimately, so i guess the georgia people will be happy to see snow. this isnt considered much by the northeastern states at all, who suffer from something 10 times the magnitude of this extent.

a new webpage host (NOT a change of blog, mind you)

well well,

i have plenty experience in HTML, but didnt expect that i'll spend this much time for my CS1371 lab work.

but whatever it is, its done, pretty neatly. you guys can visit it by going to -deleted-

so forget yahoo!/geocities, now i can host my files through the georgia tech prism server. sweeeeet.
